Five different winners in the first five races and four different pole sitters (albeit aided by a Hamilton penalty) paints an intriguing picture of the 2012 season so far. Sebastian Vettel has been F1’s fastest qualifier and racer consistently over the last two seasons. Two world championships, sixteen wins and twenty-two pole positions from thirty-eight races is how his 2010 and 2011 stacked up. The race in Bahrain scheduled for 22nd April is once again in doubt. Protests and violence seem to be the order of the day in the region with people inside and outside the sport appearing to condemn the notion of going there for the sake of a motor race. At last, we’ve entered the final week of the F1 vacuum that has been the 2011/12 winter break. Testing is over, the teams are Down Under ready for the start of the first practice session and the long awaited end to answering the same question for the umpteenth time, “Who’s fastest?”. Since I was thirteen years old, Formula One has been a central part of my life. I think I’ve always had an interest in the sport - I had a pedal-power F1 car in which I raced up and down the garden when I was little, like they did on the television (and in my imagination just as fast!)
